Document library

The Document library is where you add individual files (or folders of files) so Chat can answer with sources. In the app this is Search my documents / Add to library.

How it works (plain language)

1. You add PDFs, Word, PowerPoint, text, and similar files.
2. NELA reads them on this device and prepares them for search.
3. When you ask a question with document search on, NELA pulls the most relevant passages and can cite them.

This is the classic “chat with my uploads” path. For whole project trees on disk, prefer the File Indexer.

Good uses

• A pack of research PDFs for one topic.
• A slide deck or brief you want quoted accurately.
• Mixed office files that are not a full code/docs repo.

Privacy

Library indexing stays on your machine. In Cloud mode, only files you attach to that chat are sent for the conversation — see Private vs Cloud.

Tips

• Prefer clear, complete documents over huge scans of everything.
• If answers get worse after switching embedding models, rebuild the library index.
• Combine with File Indexer when you need both curated packs and live folders.
